水獭白天隐匿在洞中休息，夜间出来活动。除了交配期以外，平时都单独生活。为了寻找更多的食物，除了繁殖季节外，也经常迁移，从一条河到另一条河，或从上游到下游。水獭水性娴熟，善于游泳和潜水，柔软的身体和粗长的尾巴能减少在水中运动的阻力，游进时前肢靠近身体，用后肢和尾巴打水推动，同时也起着舵的作用，使身体作波浪式起伏，姿态很像鳗鱼。游动的速度很快，每分钟可以游50多m，而且升降和转向十分灵活，在水中忽前忽后，忽左忽右，翻滚自如，还喜欢像画圆圈一样游动，卷起水底的泥沙或水中的小鱼，紧急时还会像海豚一样在水面上跳跃。
