W.H 奥登（1907-1973）是公认的现代诗坛名家。电影《四个婚礼与一个葬礼》中曾引用其诗作。通过奥登的诗句可以更深地理解社会的乱象。奥登认为处在资本主义统治下的西方文化正在堕落，而人民则在机器的压榨下疲倦的毁灭下去。对于诗，奥登曾说过：诗为了存在必须是宣传。奥登诗最大的特色是他的丰富的新奇的象喻（imagery），但这也是使译者很头痛的工作，因为这种好处很难在翻译里表现出来。奥登除写诗外，并和依修伍德(C. Isherwood) 合作诗剧两种：“The Ascent of F-6” 和“The Dog beneath the Skin”。
